Garajonay National Park and the island of la Gomera

Located just a few kilometres from the Saharan coasts and in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, the island of La Gomera is home to one of the most unique and emblematic forests in Europe.

This island, crisscrossed by deep ravines, has its central part covered with relict forests from the Tertiary Era that millions of years ago populated the Mediterranean area.

The trade winds envelop the peaks, bringing humidity and freshness and creating a sponge forest that was declared a National Park in 1981 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986, as well as a Biosphere Reserve in 2012 along with the rest of the island.

The laurel forest  which comprises the National Park is a biodiversity hotspot where numerous endemic and therefore endangered species are concentrated..
